Does CBD create addiction? The answer in a WHO report

According to the report of the World Health Organization published in March 2018 and presenting to the public the current state of scientific research on cannabidiol (CBD), the cannabidiol is a safe and well-tolerated substance that does not cause physical or psychological dependence, nor side effects on our health.

The expert committee also stated that CBD is not associated with potential abuse and to date there is no evidence of public health issues associated with the use of pure CBD.

Despite the latest attempts to modify the CBD law so, which industry associations are strongly rejecting, the current scientific evidence clearly indicates its potential beneficial application for various disorders and diseases.

CBD: habituation, dependence, and tolerance

is also good to clarify a very important and often misunderstood concept such as that of addiction.

Addiction represents - in pharmacology - the set of changes and behaviors associated with the use of certain drugs and medications. If we refer to the concept of "addiction" related to drug abuse, it is more correct to speak of dependency (the case in which possession and use of a substance becomes a priority for the individual) and tolerance (the physiological condition in which the body is able to tolerate increasingly higher doses of a substance).

The tolerance can be observed in metabolism, when the amount of substance reaching the site of interest gradually decreases, in behavior, when an individual becomes accustomed to the effects, and in cells, which gradually become less receptive.

is defined as tolerance (to a substance) the reduction of the effects of the same dose: a phenomenon for which it becomes necessary toincrease of the dose to achieve the same effect.

CBD and addiction

According to scientific research, the cannabidiol (CBD)) has no psychoactive properties and does not cause addiction or dependence. A review on the safety of CBD also confirms its safety and tolerability profile for the human body.

Compared to other drugs used for conditions such as epilepsy, for example, CBD is the one that poses the lowest risk of side effects. There is no risk of addiction for those who use cannabidiol, and every day more and more encouraging results are emerging on the opposite front: that of CBD to combat addiction to other substances.

There is increasing evidence from studies confirming the usefulness of cannabidiol in helping to reduce dependence on alcohol or drugs.

In a study, published in Nature in March 2018, researchers at the University of Madrid administered cannabidiol once a day for seven days to some mice that had developed a strong dependence on alcohol and cocaine.

Based on the results of their tests, the researchers concluded that the short seven-day period of CBD treatment not only prevented the development of previously shown "addiction-like" characteristics but also discouraged the mice from relapsing for as long as 5 months, without having to take any more CBD.

The CBD could be very useful in prevent relapse in drug addicts and alcoholics, but the benefits it offers are long-lasting, which is crucial when fighting against an enemy like substance addiction

The difference between THC and CBD

Science confirms that consistent and regular use of cannabis containing delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) can lead to addiction.

The THC acts by binding to CB1 receptors. If this action occurs for a long period of time, the cells react and work to mitigate this effect and restore the normal functioning of the receptors' mechanisms.

Le cells reverse the action of THC - thus reducing its effects - in two ways. The first is called internalization, a process through which the CB1 receptors themselves cluster towards the inside of the cell, moving from the outer walls, causing the cell to become insensitive to THC. The second is desensitization: the receptors bind with increasing difficulty to active ingredient of cannabis.

Does CBD cause addiction?

No. And the reason lies in the mechanism of action of cannabidiol itself. Unlike THC, CBD does not produce any psychoactive effects and acts completely differently on CB1 receptors and, therefore, on cells compared to delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). In fact, CBD makes CB1 receptors less reactive to the action of other cannabinoids through a process called negative feedback allosteric regulation. CBD does not stimulate our endocannabinoid system but rather, it “calms” it and, at the same time, increases the amount of endocannabinoids in our body. These are the two factors that produce the well-known relaxing effects of cannabidiol

CBD is not addictive

The cannabidiol (CBD) still suffers from the legacy of a distorted image that often associates it with the concept of "drug," which is rightly linked to further concepts such as addiction and dependence.

It's time to eliminate these taboos and consider cannabidiol for what it is: a safe substance that, year after year and study after study, is proving to be increasingly useful as a natural support for body and mind. Try it now!
